Therapy that makes room for your practice

Repose is a solo practice for adults who meditate, sit quietly, walk the cliffs at dawn, or simply value stillness. I offer talk therapy, named plainly, and I leave the rest of your practice to you.

Services

Three ways to work together

All three are offered in person in Santa Cruz, or by video if you are in California.

  • A glass of tea, an open book and reading glasses on a blanket by a window

    Individual therapy

For one adult. 50-minute sessions of talk therapy at a pace you set.

    Therapy alongside a practice

For people who meditate or keep a daily practice, and want a therapist who will not try to run it.

  • An open book and a cup on a bed beside a vase of flowers

    Life transitions

For a move, a change of work, a loss or a change of course, when you want company in the thinking.

My approach

What I bring in, and what I leave out

A short list of what happens in my room, and what does not.

  • I bring in

    A method with a name

Psychodynamic therapy: we talk, and we notice the patterns that repeat in your work, your relationships and your own head.

  • I bring in

    Your practice, as a subject

If you meditate or keep a daily practice, we can talk about what it gives you and what it asks of you. I do not grade it.

  • I bring in

A plain account of the risks

Therapy can stir things up. I explain the possible risks and benefits in the first session, and you set the pace.

  • I leave out

    Mindfulness as treatment

I do not offer mindfulness or meditation as a treatment, and I do not teach it in session. If you want instruction, I will point you to a teacher.

  • I leave out

    Spiritual direction

I am a therapist, not a spiritual director. I will not tell you which tradition to follow, or whether to follow one.

  • I leave out

    Promises

I cannot say how you will feel or how long this will take. Your fee and your schedule are given in writing before we start.

How fees work

The answers to what nearly everyone asks before a first session.

  • Insurance we work with

Repose is out of network with insurance plans, so you pay for each session yourself. I do not take Medicare or Medi-Cal. If you want someone who bills your plan, I will gladly give you the names of colleagues.

    • Out of network with insurance plans

    • No Medicare or Medi-Cal

  • If you pay yourself

You pay at the end of each session by card, including HSA and FSA cards. Your fee is given to you in writing before we start, and it stays the same unless we agree otherwise ahead of time. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open; ask how to request one. I ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Each month I give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) with the dates and kind of session, to send to your plan, which may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it pays anything; ask it before you start.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. I send you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

I do not check benefits, because I do not bill your plan. If you want to know whether your plan reimburses, call it before the first session and ask about out-of-network mental health services.

Ramesh Kothari

Founder and therapist, LMFT

I see adults one at a time. I have kept a quiet practice of my own for many years, and I have learned to leave it out of the room unless you bring yours in.

In the first session I listen, explain how I work, the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of therapy, and we decide together whether to continue. My California license is listed at the foot of every page.

I see

  • Adults who keep a daily practice of any kind
  • Adults who value quiet and want company in the thinking
  • People in a change of work, home or direction

Questions

What nearly everyone asks

Do you take my insurance?

I am out of network with insurance plans: you pay for each session yourself, and I give you an itemized receipt in case your plan reimburses. I do not take Medicare or Medi-Cal.

Can I use an HSA or FSA card?

Yes. Most HSA and FSA cards work for sessions. Check with your plan administrator if you are unsure.

What happens in the first session?

It lasts 50 minutes. I explain how I work, the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of therapy, and I listen. At the end we each decide whether to continue.

Am I covered by your license where I live?

My license is from California. By video I see people who are in California during the session. If you are elsewhere, I will help you find someone licensed where you live.

What do I do in a crisis?

Call or text 988, any time. In an emergency, call 911. This site and my messages are not monitored around the clock.

Do you teach meditation, or offer mindfulness as treatment?

No. I am a therapist, not a meditation teacher, and I do not offer mindfulness as a treatment. If your practice is part of your life, we can talk about it. If you want instruction, I can point you to a teacher or a class.
